FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions
You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers. Please review our FAQs for answers to the most frequently-asked questions we receive related to HYL, our programs and lacrosse in general. If you don’t see an answer for a question you have, please let us know and we’ll add it to the FAQs. You can reach us via email at info@henryyouthlax.org.
How do we sign-up for lacrosse?
Choose “Programs” from the top menu. We may also have Pages under the Programs section for our current program we are registering for now. Once you find the current program or season you are looking for, we have different sections setup for each age group (typically by school grade range) with additional information and/or a link to the registration page. We manage registrations through USA Lacrosse’s League Management System (a separate website), so don’t be alarmed when you click on a registration link and go to USALacrosse.com. Once you complete your registration, return to our website for any additional information you might need.
I have a NEW player – what equipment does he/she need for the season?
First, we recommend parents do NOT purchase any equipment before they have an opportunity to meet and talk with their coach for the first time. Our coaches can walk you through the required equipment your player may need and can also walk you through the different options you have for equipping your player for the first time. For example, HYL has a “Gear Bank” that includes donated gear we have collected or discounted gear we have purchased. In many cases, we are able to provide free or discounted gear for new players to help reduce the cost of equipping your child for the first time.
But, since you asked, here is some basic information on what equipment is required for most of the boys or girls participating in our program:
Boys Lacrosse
Boys are required to wear a helmet, mouth guard, shoulder pads, arm pads (or arm guards or elbow pads), gloves, athletic cup, and cleats (lacrosse, football or soccer cleats are all acceptable). Players also need a boys lacrosse stick.
Girls Lacrosse
Girls are required to wear Girls Lacrosse Goggles (most common) or a Girls Lacrosse Helmet (less common), mouth guard, and cleats. Girls also need a girls lacrosse stick.
Little Laxers
Our Co-Ed K-1st “Little Laxers” players do NOT need equipment. We have sticks available for players to use. We will recommend parents purchase a stick for their player, but you can wait to purchase a stick until after a few practices (once you are sure your player will be participating on a regular basis). Players should wear a mouth guard, though this is not required for this age group. Players should wear cleats (lacrosse, football or soccer cleats are fine).
Boys Defensive Players
Boys play defense with longer sticks (referred to as “D Poles” or “Long Sticks.” Even if your new player is sure he wants to play defense, we recommend holding off on purchasing a defense stick until you are sure he will be playing defense. We will have defense sticks available for players to use in the interim.
Goalie Equipment
Our teams have goalie equipment for players to share. It is not necessary to purchase goalie equipment until a player is committed to playing goalie and wants his/her own gear. For informational purposes, goalies are required to have additional equipment, including a throat guard (attaches to the helmet), a chest protector (instead of shoulder pads), goalie gloves, arm pads (or arm guards or elbow pads – options for boys/required for girls), goalie pants and shin guards (girls only). In addition, goalies play with a goalie stick (same for girls and boys lacrosse). Again, HYL provides goalie equipment for each team – it is not necessary for parents to purchase goalie equipment.
What is included in the Registration cost?
Registration covers HYL’s costs for practices and games, which includes field rental fees, league and/or officials’ fees, practice supplies (balls, cones, etc.), and other equipment and supplies shared by teams. Registration does NOT include player uniforms – only new players or existing players that need a new uniform need to purchase a uniform. Boys uniforms are $75 and include a reversible jersey, shooter shirt and shorts. New players also receive a reversible practice jersey at no additional cost (this is included in new player registrations).
All players are required to have a current USA Lacrosse Membership. The annual cost of a membership is $35. This is built into the registration system. If you have any questions about Registration, please contact Coach Jeremy at 404.641.9023 or jeremy@henryyouthlax.org.
When and where are Practices?
Practice days/times vary by team. Please refer to the registration information provided for each team in the Programs section of this website. Practice locations vary by season as well, but this information is also included in the registration details for each team. If you are unable to find this information, please feel free to contact us at 404.641.9023 or info@henryyouthlax.org.
When and where are Games?
Competition options vary by team. Please refer to the registration information for the team you are interested in for additional details. Most teams play games on Saturday mornings or early afternoons (first choice), though we may play on some Sunday afternoons depending on opponent, field, or officials’ schedules. We do attempt to provide parents with as much notice as possible regarding games, though some teams self-schedule games and may schedule or add games as the season progresses (versus having a finalized game schedule at the start of the season). That said, some teams may play in a League and will have a schedule finalized earlier in the season. Again, the game schedule varies depending on the team your player is going to play on. If you need additional information, please contact Coach Jeremy at 404.641.9023 or jeremy@henryyouthlax.org.
What is your Refund Policy?
If you register for a program, we want you and your player to have a good experience. Our official Refund Policy is that we do not issue refunds once practice starts. Unofficially, we understand life happens and will evaluate any/all refund requests on a case-by-case basis. If your player is unable to participate for some reason, we will either issue a full or partial refund for registration OR issue a full or partial credit that can be used towards future seasons or programs we may offer. Once practice begins, any decision to refund some or all of your registration fees is at the discretion of our leadership team.
If we have made a payment for any goods or services related to the season, we may not be able to issue a full refund (as these costs are divided across all players participating in the season). For example, if we have paid for field use or league participation, we will be unable to refund your player’s share of this expense.
Separate from registration, if we have ordered a uniform for your player and are unable to use your uniform for another player, you will be responsible for paying for the uniform you ordered. We will make every effort to try to use your uniform for another player.
If you purchased a USA Lacrosse Membership (or renewed an existing Membership), we are unable to refund this portion of your registration fees. Membership fees go directly to USA Lacrosse (we do not have the ability to refund this payment).
What is your policy for “Playing Time”?
HYL is a recreational lacrosse program. Our approach to “playing time” is that all players should get equal playing time – provided those players are regularly attending and participating in practices. If your player is showing up and putting the work in, you should expect they will get equal playing time in games. If you have any issues or concerns related to playing time, please discuss directly with your team’s coach outside of practice or game situations. If you are unable to resolve these concerns or issues with your team’s coach, please contact Coach Jeremy at 404.641.9023 or jeremy@henryyouthlax.org.
This is just the beginning of our FAQs section. If you have questions that are not answered here, please let us know via email at info@henryyouthlax.org. Your feedback will help us make this section more useful and informative for others. Thank you in advance for your suggestions!
